‘WomensWork’

MA Capsule Collection

WomensWork is a collection by Georgia Gough that uncovers the forgotten histories of women involved in the textile and garment making industries and highlights the value of craft from both individual and collective angles

WomensWork tells stories as much through experimental pattern cutting, that reveals concealed intricacies, as the tactile needlework that drags an unmistakable humanity to the fore.

As maker and seamstress with almost a decade of luxury and bespoke knowledge Georgia brings a love of intricate garment details and construction with her in the pursuit of her Womenswear MA. She tells stories of inspiring women in craft through experimental pattern cutting and thoughtful needlework. With a post-growth, community focused mentality, she seeks to champion makers, their skills and their histories.

The focus on utility and enjoyment of wearing still allows for familiar silhouettes to be challenged, in features such as enlarged pockets, borrowed from the tie-on pockets, or Saccoccia, of 16th century working women. Other elements such as drawn thread embroidery, pay homage to skilled hands not only in their aesthetic but also by reusing the crafted materials themselves to reduce waste and promote longevity.

These practices describe deeply personal journeys - primarily the transformation from maker to designer - and guide the design development. The garments retain the designer's pragmatism as an industry professional, while her boldness in breaking out of this restrictive psychology, so commonly imposed on craftspeople, emerges through the design development.

The use of local and mid-local mills is pronounced, extending the meaning of sustainability and responsibility beyond protecting the earth, into respect for heritage as well as protecting workers’ identities and their livelihoods.
