‘WomensWork’

MA Pre-Collection

The WomensWork pre-collection resonates with the struggles of women working as lacemakers in 16th century Europe. Inspired by their challenges, design processes develop as a response to their emotional struggle, resilience and creativity

The conceptual groundwork for the final MA collection emerged as a mini pre-collection, guided by a four-pillared manifesto:

  • Women in garment labour:

We strive to shed light on the unseen hands that create our clothes, expose the untold narratives, channelling the defiant spirits of historically oppressed women in garment labour.

  • Reuse “women’s work”:

Stitching, patching and quilting become our transformative means of storytelling, echoing the enduring strength of “women’s work” and the resilience it symbolises. Through our creations, we honour the contributions of those who came before us, while paving the way for a more equitable future.

  • Green-fingered witch:

Our creations embody the enigmatic allure of the green fingered witch - an archetype that reveres nature, environmental consciousness and revels in the enduring elegance of exquisite craft.

  • Heritage in cloth:

We champion respect and transparency to honour the generations of weaving traditions and expertise of our sources. Cherishing these origins and collaborating with mills close to home to mindfully reduce our carbon footprint.

Cultivating compassion, inclusivity and empowerment. Crafting clothes as a vessel for storytelling and a conduit for change.

As a maker drawn to interesting construction details and utility within clothing, Georgia employs details such as pockets to explore a unique and abstract approach to clothing design. Abrupt triangular shapes symbolising the sharp emotions of frustration inform the experimental pattern cutting techniques. Patched triangles not only reinforce vulnerable areas but also pay homage to the silent strength of women in the industry and promote sustainability by reducing waste.
